Need help with XP problems

I have a huge problem with my computer. I turned it on one day and I was unable to access "My Computer", the Control Panel and I can't open any folders. It boots extremely slow and safe mode doesn't help at all. I can't run internet explorer but Firefox works perfectly with no problems at all. System restore doesn't work, even in safe mode. My computer ran a check disk and now my cd/dvd drives don't work! If I unplug the dvd drive, the cd drive works and nothing I can do will make the dvd drive work. I tried reinstalling XP but that froze right at the start.

I have a dimension 4600 and I replaced my dvd drive with a dvd burner which worked until recently. I ran a virus scan on the norton recovery disk, virus definitions not updated and nothing was found.

Sounds like you may need to do a clean install of XP.

Whenever I put in my XP install disk, it boots to windows xp. It will say "press any key" and i'll press a key, then it just boots up xp. Any idea why this happens?

Sounds like you need to change the boot device in the bios to boot first from the CD/dvd drive, then the hard disk.

Cd drive is first, I even disabled it from reading the hard disk at all to boot from and it booted from it anyway.
