I replaced one of my desktops with a new laptop which has Vista. I also have a desktop with XP. I have them networked. When both of my machines were XP, the networking was fine. Now, the Vista machine is very slow to recognize the XP machine. The printer and internet networking is fine and quick too.
Yes, I tried you suggestion. Only, I changed the workgroup designation for the Vista machine to MSHOME. The Vista machine is still very slow. Should I try to reverse both workgroup disignations to WORKGROUP?
On the XP machine you need to change the Workgroup name to WORKGROUP which is the default for Vista. If I remember correctly, the default Workgroup name in XP is MSHOME.
That would make no difference. Vista networking is faster if the workgroups are named the same. You can name both workgroups anything you want. Open Network and Sharing Center on the vista computer and select the options you want. Selecting File sharing, printer sharing, network discovery etc. will configure the firewall & setup for faster access. Vista Help has very good tips.
Why does it take so long for the Vista machine to recognize our other computer? Is there another setting I should change? When the other machine is recognized, the Vista machine asks for a password. How do I turn that step off?
Thanks Rebel9. I will read through the information and hopefully will be able to understand it. I know I had a quick and smooth setup with networking two XP machnies and I was hoping for an improvement with Vista.
Try this jimnora! I am told it works but have not installed my Vista yet. This is installed on the xp machines so they will be seen in Vista. They must have SP2.
