Not wanting to step on Denny, others have had problems recently with desktop icons not opening. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows  folder. Scroll down the listing to Notepad.Exe and right-click> 'send to'> desktop (create shortcut). Then see if it opens correctly.

    n2u2nyte,

Right-click on the Notepad listiing in Accessories and select Properties. What is shown in the "Target:" box?

    n2u2nyte,

Change that to read %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe which should restore the proper performance.

    n2u2nyte,

If it isn't in C:\Windows\system32, do the following. Insert your Windows XP CD in the drive then go to Start|Run, enter cmd and click OK. At the command prompt enter the following, substituting the letter of your CD-ROM drive for X:

    expand X:\i386\notepad.ex_ c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe

Press . (There is a space after ex_ and before c:\.)

Once notepad has been expanded into the system32 folder and the target reference has been corrected it should work.
