Please help with Java Problem

My Dell Inspirion laptop came with a Java web start program installed on it in August of 2004. A week or so ago I had an ad or spyware problem that caused me alot of problems that ended with me reinstalling XP pro and Office 03 after installing a couple of spyware programs and uninstalling one of them.
After doing this I found that the Java web start program was giving me an error when I clicked on it to see if all programs were working properly. I went out and installed Java 2 Runtime Environment Std edition 1.4.2_05. It also has Default Virtual Machine 1.4.2_05-b04 and Java plug-in 1.4.2_05 from your website.

I now think that this was not the original Java program that came with the pc because I am having some other problems with windows that should be coming up in some online pages that worked fine before the problem I had. Does anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot this or where I can go to download the original Java program Dell sent with the pc? I did find 1.4.2_03 that I believe was originally on the pc and clicked thru all the app entries in my search of my harddrive.
Below is a window that now pops up when I get onto one of these sites
Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_03

On another site I am told that I have a contact manager window open (which I don't)/ The window must be closed before another can be opened/ Please save your information and close the window before proceeding.
There is also a small window open on the bottom of my screen named about:blank - Microsoft Internet Explorer
Please help, I am baffled
I can be emailed directly at cbianchi@hbrhomes.com

My pc is an Inspirion 9100 w/XP Pro and Office 03.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try restoring the system to a time prior to the onset of the problem that cused this.

http://www.javatester.org/  You can test your version of JAVA at this site. I have version 1.4.2.05 and it works with XP.  You might want to uninstall and try reinstalling.

    CMBianchi,

Microsoft VM does no harm residing on your system (both VMs coexist nicely as long as only one is in use). As long as Microsoft VM is working properly there is no urgency in updating the Java Runtime Environment from Sun but keep the download site handy in Favorites for the day in the future when some new implementation of Java is not handled properly by the Microsoft product.

If you elect to remove the Microsoft VM create a Restore Point prior to starting just in case a problem arises with editing the registry. This will allow you to gracefully restore your system.

I got it fixed with the help of a helpdesk. But I now am running MS Virtual Machine.

I still have the Sun _03 on my machine but am not using it now. Do you think I should uninstall _03 and MS VM and download _05? The uninstall of MS VM seems pretty complicated with the needed removal of some registry keys per the website you sent me. Being a novice in that area I'm a bit concerned
