Setting Admin password for the first time

Greetings,

I'm a new buyer of a Inspiron 5150 with Windows XP Home installed.  Today, I gave myself a password to access the desktop.  I just went back and tried to log in and it will not recognize the password I gave it.  It keeps giving me an error message.  I have tried to think of all of the reasons it is not working.  I am a long time user of XP Pro on my desktop and have never had a problem.  The only thing I can think of is that the password I gave it was only three characters in legnth (the numbers 751).  Could that be the problem?  If it is, how do I void the password and access the drive to give myself another?

try this, after you login to windows, go to start/run/, and type:

    "control userpasswords2", and hit enter..

make sure the box is checked to require passwords, and then edit the "administrator's" password, there..

you can make it blank, if you like..

if you can login to the administrator account, you can change the passwords.. to login as "administrator", press "F8" as the computer is booting up, then, login as "administrator".. that is an alternative way of logging in..

if you have not set a password for the "administrator" account, when it says enter a password, leave the entry blank, and press "enter"..

something you could try, use the recovery console, if you can manage to login to it.. again, if the password for the "administrator" is blank, just leave it blank, and press "enter"..

after you login to the recovery console, at the dos prompt, type "chkdsk /p".. that will check for disk errors and corrent them, if found.. it might help..

Thanks for the reply but maybe I didn't make myself clear.  When I turn on the computer, I get a screen that has my user name and a box for a password.  When I type in the password I gave it, 751, it asks me if I forgot my password.  So I can't get to run or anything else.  Does anybody know how to reset it to default by going inside the case or by some other means?

Is the password protected identity a name/account that you set up, or is it the primary system Administrator account?  If it's for a name/user that you set up, restart the system, and when you get to the Welcome/Login screen, press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice, which should take you to the system administrator login.  That password is blank by default, so just hit Enter, and you'll be in the Admin account.  From there, you can go to Control Panel - User Accounts and edit/delete the password you set up for the user name you created.

Success!  Thanks for the input guys.  I hit F8 on the boot and went to the Safe Mode and typed "control userpasswords2" in run.  Also did the checkdsk etc.  It still tried to hang on the boot but I went back and did it again and it finally worked.  I noticed that the second time I went to control my user and my admin were the same.  I rebooted and went right to the desktop.
