Sorry don't understand as I thought the the only speech recognition XP had was using "Narrator" by selecting "All Programs" > "Accessories"  > "Accessibility" > "Narrator".
Or press Windows+U keys together.
Only works with English.

What Training are you referring to.?

The speech recoginition I am refering to is for dictation. It can be found in the control panel under Speech and also in MS Office applications. But I cannot get it to work. The training I am talking about is where you read text into the computer so it will be "trained" to your pattern of speech. I have done that, and also followed everything I could find under the help menus..all with no luck.

Also (this has nothing to do with the topic, but the forum itself) why can't I add my saved macros to my message? There used to be a button you could check to do this.

The speech recognition is only available in Windows XP if you install office XP or Office 2003

As speech recognition isn't a stranded feature of XP , supplied with Microsoft Office I think so you might also POST this question in MS Office Products Forum

Appently you have to install speech recognition by
Clicking Speech on the Tools menu in Microsoft Word installs speech recognition in all Office XP programs, or you can do a custom installation.

Thank you for the replies. I am running Windows XP Pro and Office XP pro. The speech recognition is available in Windows XP Pro without MS Office installed. It is suppose to work with any program (except notepad) I set it up and did the training from the "Speech" option in the control panel. I also set it up and did the training in MS Word

This is a cut and paste from Windows XP Professional Help Window
"Speech recognition (SR) is the ability of the operating system to convert spoken words to written text. An internal driver, called an SR engine, recognizes words and converts them to text. The SR engine may be installed with the operating system or at a later time with other software." As you can see, it is not dependent (if I am reading it right)on MS Office. Either way, I still can't get it to work although I have set it up in both the OS and MS Office.

I have XP Pro & SR engine isn't part of standard XP OS , I have checked Speech Properties & there isn't any tab for SR.
Suggest you use Help & Support , Search for     SR   & Troubleshoot.

If Speech Properties microphone level check is poor

use Control Panel > Sounds, .....> Sounds & Audio ... > Audio tab , Sound recording , Volume , Microphone Select is ticked & Volume is set to MAX , Options > Advanced controls then click on Advanced button when shown & tick "Microphone Boost".

I recently found out that the "Speech Recognition" had been installed by Dell-that is why it was already on the computer. Still can't get it to work though!

DELL install other Programs you order with Computer like Microsoft Office & thats were it came from.
Did you set Microphone Boost & what does test of SR show , ie:

"For speech recognition (SR)
Open Speech in Control Panel, and then click the Speech Recognition tab.
Speak into the microphone. A properly working microphone will display the input volume in the display area. The level will increase and decrease as the speaking volume changes.
If no level is indicated, see Possible Speech Recognition Problems for troubleshooting solutions."

The Boost Mic is set. When I go through the "Voice Training" portion of SR it shows the mic working and it plays back my voice just fine. I know it must be something simple that I am missing, but I have spent a week going through support forums and MS Support and am still comming up with a blank.

To be honest it is not a "must have" thing, but now it just bugs me that I can't get it to work and I refuse to give up!

Here is the list in help for the setup of SR

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional and Language Options.
On the Languages tab, under Text services and input languages, click Details.
Under Installed services, click Add.
In the Input language list, click an input language.
Click to select the Speech check box, and then click an option in the list.

Everything is fine except the last line "Click to select the Speech check box, and then click an option in the list." This is where the problem is-the Speech Text Box is grayed out-in otherwords I can not select it and I can not figure how to activate it.
