I just bought a Dimension 4700C with WIN XP SP2 operating system. My previous computer had WIN 98. My problem is as follows:
When I first got the new computer, I set up WIN Explorer to look and act basically the same as I had become used to in WIN 98. That is when I opened Explorer, there were basically two columns; one one the left showed the drives and folders, the one on the right showed what files/folders were contained in the left folder if you clicked on it.
If you double clicked in a folder on the right column, it opened the folder showing what it contained. Now when I double click on any folder on the right side, the "SEARCH" folder opens up!!!!
I have tried playing around with the settings in control panel - folder options with no success, including file extension program linking. I'd appreciate any recommendations as I'm not a beginner, and this is driving nuts!!!
I finally tried out "System Restore" with one heck of a lot of trepidation, BUT it worked!!!! I set it for a week ago when I knew I wasn't having the problem and the wizard walked me through and restored things in about 5 minutes.
I guess I learned a bit more with this episode and hope others may benefit from my experience.

On your IE toolbar View|Explorer Bar and deselect folders.
