Windows update keeps installing identical updates
Every single time I run windows update (or have it automatically run which I tend to prefer) it tells me that there is a critical update which must be installed. It is always the same update though - KB828741. Each time it installs and says installation successful (no error messages), yet next time I switch the computer on, its there again telling me to install it!
This has been going on for the past 2 weeks now - I can't believe microsoft are re-issuing a critical update every single day with exactly the same name? Is there any way to get around this problem, as its proving a bit irritating. P.s. I have scoured the microsoft website but couldn't find anything related.

I have followed your advise of deleting the catroot2 folder and deleting the registry entry for this update, but have still got problems. I was unable to uninstall this update (KB828741 from add/remove programs as it didn't have a "remove" optiion).
Every single time I go to windows update (or use auto update) I get the message that I must install this critical update. I install it, get a message saying installation successful, yet next day I get the same message saying I need to install it again. This is getting really irritating - is there anything else I could possibly try to stop this?
Not a bad idea. Turn off Auto Update feature for 2-3 days and check site manually. Also, make sure previous updates *and* this one is installed correctly (ie "Current"). Easiest way is to use the following MS utility.

Many posts here and elsewhere about Windows update not recognising which patches are installed, it is not a new one each time with the same name, but the same patch. Leave it installed, use manual update instead of auto update until MS fixes this.

There may be a definitive answer for this but you may have to try a few things. I would try this:
Turn off Auto-Updating.
Delete the folder called catroot2.
Uninstall the patch and Re-boot.
Go to windowsupdate site and download/install it from there. Reboot.
Turn on Auto-Update.
P.S. I left out the part about deleting the hotfix you mentioned in the Registry; if your familiar with working in the Registry you could do this if it shows up after the uninstall/reboot of the patch. Here's the MS instructions on how to do this. (Always a good idea to backup the Registry before editing it; Export the whole Registry to C: Name it "April".)
