The XPS 8700 runs windows 10 fine. Dell even has the win 10 drivers for it. Windows 8 is just partially supported now and will go the way of windows 7 soon. Easy to install by using the Media Creation Tool and burning the iso file to installation media. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 

No need to install windows 8 first.

indicates the the HDD (hard disk drive) Self Test was unsuccessful

I have a XPS 18 that is DOA... Had the hard drive backed up to external HD.

We were given a used XPS 18, less  hard drive. all that was needed was the CMOS battery.

replaced battery, installed our hard drive out our old system. Did psa check everything passed, except our old hard drive error code 2000-0142

old hard drive was tested when removed and was told it was good. So question is, is it possible that we need to erase and install the operating system for the new XPS 18?

If this was the original hard drive in your DOA XPS 18, given its age, it is possible it has failed.

Ok.... can anyone direct me to where I can purchase and compatible HD?

I have been looking and not all are compatible. When I put in the service tag for parts dell doesn’t offer a replacement. 
would like to stay with the 1tb

Do you have an XPS 18 1810 or 1820? Both appear to have 2.5" SATA3 Hard Disk Drives (HDD). 1TB 2.5" HDDs are pretty standard and mostly used in laptops. Laptops normally use 5400 rpm HDDs to save power but 7200 rpm HDDs are also available if you want more speed. If you wish to spend more money (roughly twice as much) you could replace the HDD with a 2.5" Solid State Drive (SSD).  

What is it about the HDDs you have been looking at that makes them not compatible?

So this is not in my wheel house. Went to order one and asked for service tag.. after put it in ... said not compatible only gave me option for a 550gb. 
I prefer 1 to 2tb ssd 

so if you have a recommendation that would be much appreciated.

I like the XPS 18... so don’t mind upgrading..
