Before You Begin

This article provides Wi-Fi Adapter Settings to Improve Slow Performance after completing basic troubleshooting. If you have not already tried the basic steps, refer to our Make Your Home Wi-Fi Better: Boost Speed and Signal library page.

Prerequisites: Before proceeding with these advanced steps, ensure that you have:

  • Physical access to your router - You must be able to physically reach, move, and reposition your Wi-Fi router. Several steps in this guide require relocating the router to a central, elevated position (such as a high shelf) and adjusting its antennas.
  • Know your router model and age - Identify the manufacturer, model number, and approximate age of your router. Older routers may not support modern wireless standards (such as Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, or Wi-Fi 7) and may need to be replaced to achieve faster speeds. Check the label on the bottom or back of your router for this information.
  • Know the wireless standard that your router supports - Confirm whether your router supports 802.11n (Wi-Fi 4), 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6), or 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7). This determines the maximum speed that your network can deliver, regardless of any optimization steps. Refer to your router's documentation or the manufacturer's website.
  • Know your Internet Service Provider (ISP) plan speed - Your Wi-Fi speed cannot exceed the maximum speed provided by your ISP subscription.
  • Identify common sources of interference - Before beginning, take note of devices near your router that may cause wireless interference, including:
    • Microwave ovens
    • Bluetooth devices
    • Cordless phones
    • Baby monitors
    • Other Wi-Fi routers or access points from neighbors
    You must move the router away from these sources as part of the optimization steps.
  • Count the devices on your network - Know approximately how many devices (laptops, phones, tablets, smart TVs, IoT devices) are actively connected to your Wi-Fi network. Network congestion from too many simultaneous devices is a primary cause of slow speeds and must be evaluated before making changes.
  • Access to your router's admin settings (optional) - Some advanced recommendations may require logging into your router's administration page (typically accessed using a web browser at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Have your router's admin username and password available. Refer to your router's documentation if you have not changed the default credentials.

NOTE: Depending on your wireless adapter's model, driver version, or operating system, some of the specific options listed below may not be available. Whenever a wireless driver is updated, it is recommended to re-check these settings.

To confirm or change the Advanced Wireless adapter settings, perform the following steps.

  1. Right-click the Windows icon and select Device Manager.
  2. Locate Your Wireless Adapter: Click the arrow next to Network Adapters to expand the device list.
  3. Open Adapter Properties: Double-click your specific wireless adapter.
  4. Access Advanced Settings: Click the Advanced tab.
  5. Modify Property Values: In the Property box, locate the following items in Table 1 (if available) and confirm or update their Value using the corresponding drop-down menu:

Select the highest standard available in the drop-down menu to ensure compatibility with modern wireless standards. You may manually limit this to 5 GHz only if experiencing band-switching instability.
Roaming Aggressiveness
Lowest (or Medium-Low)
Controls how aggressively the adapter scans for and switches to different access points. Keep low for stationary home devices to prevent connection lag and drops. Set to Medium only on business networks where you physically move between access points.
Transmit Power
Highest (or 5)
Maximizes the broadcast signal strength from your device's adapter to the router or access point.
Throughput Booster / Enhancement
Disabled
Enable only if your computer is the primary/sole device on the network or if prioritizing massive local transfers. Enabling it prevents other devices on the network from having equal Wi-Fi access.
Fat Channel Intolerant
Disabled
Allows the use of wider channel bonding, which improves overall transfer speeds on compatible networks.

  1. Save Changes: Click OK to apply your new settings and close the Device Manager.
