Linking your Microsoft account to your Windows digital license is optional but strongly recommended, because it lets you reactivate Windows automatically using the built-in Activation Troubleshooter after significant hardware changes (such as replacing a motherboard) — without needing a product key.
How to link your Microsoft account (Windows 11/10):
- Confirm you are signed in as an administrator: Settings > Accounts > Your info — you should see "Administrator" under your name.
- If you do not have a Microsoft account yet, create one via How to create a new Microsoft account.
- Go to Settings > System > Activation > Add an account, then sign in with your Microsoft account credentials.
