1. Where Is the Windows 11 or Windows 10 Product Key on a Dell PC?

Factory-installed Windows 11 and Windows 10 computers work differently from older Windows versions. Previously, the product key was printed on a physical sticker (Certificate of Authenticity) attached to the computer, which could be re-entered if Windows were reinstalled.

For modern Dell PCs running Windows 11 or Windows 10:

  • The product key is digitally "injected" into the computer's motherboard (BIOS/UEFI firmware) at the factory.
  • During installation, Windows reads this embedded key directly from firmware to activate automatically.
  • You do not need to locate or manually enter a physical key.

Exception: If you purchased a boxed/retail copy of Windows separately, or a refurbished Dell device, you may need to enter a 25-character product key manually. See the Methods of Windows Activation: Digital License vs. Product Key section below for where to find it based on how you obtained Windows.

2. How to Check Your Windows Activation Status

  1. Right-click the Start icon (or select Start > Settings).
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Activation.
  4. Review the message under Activation status.

What the activation status messages mean

Genuine copy, activated, not linked to a Microsoft account

Optional: link your Microsoft account (see below)

Genuine copy, fully activated and linked

None — this is the ideal state

Windows is not activated

Not activated; an error message will explain why

3. Why Link Your Microsoft Account to Your Digital License?

Linking your Microsoft account to your Windows digital license is optional but strongly recommended, because it lets you reactivate Windows automatically using the built-in Activation Troubleshooter after significant hardware changes (such as replacing a motherboard) — without needing a product key.

How to link your Microsoft account (Windows 11/10):

  1. Confirm you are signed in as an administrator: Settings > Accounts > Your info — you should see "Administrator" under your name.
  2. If you do not have a Microsoft account yet, create one via How to create a new Microsoft account. This hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.
  3. Go to Settings > System > Activation > Add an account, then sign in with your Microsoft account credentials.
  4. Confirm the status now reads "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account."

4. Methods of Windows Activation: Digital License vs. Product Key

Windows 11 and Windows 10 activate using one of two methods, depending on how the copy of Windows was obtained:

  • Digital license (called a "digital entitlement" in Windows 11) — tied to your device hardware and/or Microsoft account; no key entry required.
  • Product key — a 25-character code in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, entered manually.

5. Reinstalling Windows or Replacing Hardware

  • Reinstalling Windows: If your device already has a digital license, you can reinstall the same Windows edition without re-entering a product key — during setup, choose "I don't have a product key", and Windows will activate automatically online once installation finishes.
  • Replacing the motherboard: A significant hardware change can cause Windows to show as un-activated. If your Dell system's motherboard was replaced by an authorized technician, reactivation is typically automatic. If not, use the Activation Troubleshooter (only available if your Microsoft account is linked to your digital license) at Settings > System > Activation.

6. How to Identify a Genuine Windows 11 or Windows 10 Installation

A genuine copy of Windows is one published by Microsoft, properly licensed, and eligible for full Windows Update access (not just critical security patches).

To verify:

  1. Right-click Start > System > Activation.
  2. Confirm the status reads "Windows is activated," "...with a digital license," or "...with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account."

Additional signs of a genuine, licensed Dell system:

  • A visible Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label, proof-of-license label, or hologram (older/refurbished devices).
  • No persistent "Windows is not genuine" desktop watermark or notification.
NOTE: Even non-genuine Windows installations continue to receive critical security updates, but they are excluded from optional updates, feature updates, and other Windows benefits.

7. Troubleshooting: "Windows Is Not Activated" or "Windows Is Not Genuine"

Common causes and fixes:

Cause

Fix

Windows was reinstalled with the wrong/mismatched product key (e.g., after a repair)

Re-enter the original product key at Settings > System > Activation > Change product key

The same license was installed on more than one PC

Windows licenses are generally valid for one PC only; purchase an additional license or see Microsoft Volume Licensing This hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies. for multi-device options

Counterfeit or improperly licensed software

Verify via the Microsoft "How to Tell" This hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies. resource; purchase a genuine license if confirmed counterfeit

Significant hardware change (e.g., motherboard replacement)

Use the Activation Troubleshooter (requires a linked Microsoft account)
