In this video, we will demonstrate how to replace the M.2 2280 Solid-State Drive, with an M.2 2230 Solid-State Drive, or SSD. Before removing the M.2 2280 solid-state drive, read through the safety guidelines to protect your computer from potential damage and ensure your personal safety. For more information about safety guidelines, see the Inspiron 7506 2-in-1 Silver Service Manual at Dell.com/support.
Before you begin, ensure that you create a recovery drive and back up all data. Ensure that you turn off your computer and disconnect all attached peripherals. To remove the base cover, remove the six screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Then, loosen the three captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly.
Starting from the top-right corner, use a plastic scribe to pry off the base cover to release the base cover from the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Peel the tape that secures the battery cable to the system board. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board. Turn your computer over, and press the power button for 15 seconds to drain the flea power.
Now, let's remove the M.2 2280 solid-state drive. First, remove the two screws that secure the solid-state drive thermal bracket to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Then, lift that solid-state drive thermal bracket off of the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Slide and remove the solid-state drive from the solid-state drive slot. You have now successfully removed the M.2 2280 solid-state drive.
Now, let's install the M.2 2230 solid-state drive. First, remove the screw that secures the solid-state drive bracket to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Turn the solid-state drive bracket at an angle of 180 degrees. Then, shift the solid-state drive bracket to the other side of the solid-state drive slot. Replace the screw that secures the solid-state drive bracket to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Slide the solid-state drive firmly into the slot at an angle.
Replace the screw that secures the solid-state drive to the solid-state drive bracket. Align the screw hole on the SSD thermal bracket with the screw hole on the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Align the notch on the solid-state drive thermal bracket with the tab on the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Impress the solid-state drive thermal bracket firmly. Replace the screw that secures that solid-state drive thermal bracket to the palm rest and keyboard assembly.
Once the M.2 2230 solid-state drive is installed, connect the battery cable and install the base cover back to the computer. Connect the battery cable to the system board. Adhere the tape that secures the battery cable to the system board. To install the base cover, align the screw holes on the base cover with the screw holes on the palm rest and keyboard assembly, and then snap the base cover into place.
Replace the six screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Tighten the three captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. The M.2 2230 SSD installation process is now complete. For additional information about this procedure and more, see the Service Manual document at Dell.com/support.
