A touchpad or trackpad on laptops is a pointing device with a tactile sensor that allows you to control the cursor or mouse pointer to select text, icons, files, and more. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, the suggested quick steps might help.

  • The cursor moves slowly or erratically
  • The cursor does not move or respond when you click the mouse buttons
  • The cursor disappears

Here are a few quick steps that you can take to resolve your touchpad issue

Try each step and check if your touchpad issue is resolved. If the issue is not resolved, proceed to the next step.

  1. Ensure that the touchpad is turned on.
  2. Ensure that the touchpad is clean and does not have any dirt, grease, liquids, or food (the touchpad must make good contact with your finger to work correctly).
  3. Save any data, close any open programs, and restart the computer.
  4. Optimize your Dell computer using the SupportAssist application that is installed on your computer. If SupportAssist is not available on your computer, proceed to the next step.
  5. Go to, download and install the latest BIOS and latest drivers for your Dell computer.
NOTE: When there are no touchpad drivers listed for Windows 11, Windows 10, or Windows 8(8.1) on website, it means that Microsoft provides the drivers through Windows Update. Windows Update will install new touchpad drivers when available. In this case Dell does not host touchpad drivers for such laptops.
  6. Download and install the latest operating system updates.
  7. Run the SupportAssist hardware test on the touchpad. If the test fails, contact Dell Technical Support.
