In this video, we will show how to set the power saving mode to balanced and its impact on a Dell PERC. Note that this configuration is not supported on H330 controller.
To begin the process, turn on the system, and press F2 to go to the System Setup page. Click Device Settings, and then click Dell PERC. Now, click Controller Management, Advanced Controller Properties, and then click Physical Disk Power Management.
You can see that the Power Saving Mode drop-down menu is set to No Power Savings option, by default. And all the power management options are Disabled. Now, select Balanced Power Savings option.
You can now see that the Spin Down Hot Spare, Spin Down RAID Capable and Automatic Disk Power Savings options are now Enabled. However, the Spin Down Configured drives option remains Disabled.
Go ahead and click Apply Changes. The operation is now completed successfully, click OK. Now, reboot the system. Please note that the power management option is enabled only when the system boots in to the operating system.
Launch Server Administrator. Type the login credentials, and then click Submit. In the left pane, expand Storage, PERC H730P Adapter, Connector RAID0, Enclosure, and then Physical Disks.
Here you can view the connected physical disks that are in Spun Up power status. The first four disks are in Online state and the remaining are in Ready state and one physical disk is assigned as a global hot spare.
Click Execute. Next, check the power status of physical disks after 30 minutes. The power status of Online state physical disks remains same. But the power status of Ready state physical disks are changed to Spun down including the assigned global hot spare.
Please note that if you reboot your system again, the power status of all disks changes to Spun up. And that the same action is repeated after 30 minutes. For more information visit dell.com/support.
