Prerequisites
CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that are shipped with your product.
Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions section.
Follow the procedure listed in the Before working inside your system section.
Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals.
Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and disconnect the peripherals.
If applicable, remove the system from the rack.

Remove the system cover.
Remove all the hard drives.
Keep the Phillips #2 screwdriver ready.
Removing the hard drive backplane:
Disconnect the control panel cables from the power distribution board.
Remove the screws that secure the hard drive cage to the chassis.
Remove the screws that secure the control panel to the chassis.
Remove the hard drive cage from the chassis.
Disconnect all the cables connected to the hard drive backplane.
Remove the screws that secure the backplane to the hard drive cage.
Remove the backplane from the hard drive cage.
Installing the hard drive backplane:
Install the backplane into the hard drive cage.
Install the screws that secure the backplane to the hard drive cage.
Connect all the cables to the backplane.
Install the screws that secure the hard drive cage to the chassis.
Install the screws that secure the control panel to the chassis.
Reconnect the cables to the midplanes and PDB 1.
Install the hard drives.
Follow the procedure listed in the After working inside your system section.
Install the system cover.
If applicable, install the system into the rack.
Reconnect the peripherals and connect the system to the electrical outlet.
Turn on the system, including any attached peripherals.
