Prerequisites
CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that are shipped with your product.
Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions section.
Follow the procedure listed in before working inside your system:
Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals.
Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and disconnect the peripherals.
If applicable, remove the system from the rack.
Remove the system cover.
Remove the system top cover (front).
NOTE: The procedure for removing each fan is identical.
Removing a cooling fan:
Disconnect the cooling fan power cable from the system board.
Hold the cooling fan by its edges and lift the cooling fan out of the chassis.
Installing a cooling fan:
Hold the cooling fan by the sides with the cable end facing the system board.
CAUTION: Make sure the airflow arrows on the side of the fans are pointing to the rear of the chassis. If the cooling fan is installed in reverse direction the system may overheat.
Align the cooling fan with the slot on the chassis and slide the fan into the slot.
Connect the cooling fan power cable to the cooling fan connector on the system board.
Install the system top cover (front).
Follow the procedure listed in after working inside your system.
Install the system cover.
If applicable, install the system into the rack.
Reconnect the peripherals and connect the system to the electrical outlet.
Turn on the system, including any attached peripherals.
