In this video, we will show you how to recover your operating system or install an operating system on a new or replaced hard drive. To perform this recovery process, you will need the recovery media you made previously. If you need to create recovery media, you can watch our video by clicking the link in the description.
In this example, we have created a recovery USB flash drive. Connect the drive to any of the USB ports, power on the system, and press F12 at the Dell splash screen until a menu appears. This is a one-time boot menu. Select USB Storage Device using the arrow key and press Enter.
The Dell Backup and Recovery console will open. Select Run the program from your system recovery USB drive and click Next. On the next screen, you can read about the recovery process. Once done, click Next. The program will check your system for recovery compatibilty. Click Next to start the process.
On the next screen you can opt to restore the system using a factory image. Next, select Factory Recovery - Deletes data and resets all partitions and click Next. On the next screen, you have the option to backup your data. This option will not be available if installing on a new or replacement hard drive.
If you want to backup your data, select Yes, backup my personal files and click Next. You will be given an option of save your photos, music, documents, e-mail, calendars, contacts, favorites, and financial data. Click Select more to backup a specific folder. Select the folder and click Next.
Depending on the amount of data to be backed up, this process may take several minutes or several hours. Once complete, Dell Backup and Recovery will continue to restore your system and then your data. The system will boot to the start screen once the first time setup is complete.
