In this video, we will cover the process of replacing a faulted IO module in a Dell EMC Unity storage system. Before you begin: Ensure, that you always wear proper electrostatic discharge or ESD protection when servicing the system. Each storage processor or SP in the disk processor enclosure or DPE contain two IO module slots.
They are located in the back of the DPE. First, in Unisphere, select System View to locate the faulted IO module in the enclosure and identify the SP it is seated in. In the Enclosure view, it will be marked orange. Before you begin, place the system into a special mode called reset and hold.
In this mode, the SP assembly is powered on, but IO modules, embedded modules, and 4-port cards can be safely removed. You should only place one SP in reset and hold at a time. When the SP has been placed into reset and hold, the SP fault LED and power LED are lit solid amber and green, respectively, and the Unsafe to remove LED is lit on the other SP.
Next, locate the faulted IO module, and label and disconnect the cables. Gently pull the trigger mechanism on the IO module handle to release it. Next, take the replacement IO module and align it with the empty slot. Carefully push the module into the slot. When the IO module appears seated, push and release the small button on the handle.
If the button remains in, the module is fully seated. If the button springs back, gently push the module further into the chassis, then push it again. Finally, return to Unisphere and reboot the SP into normal mode. It can take up to 15 minutes for the system to reboot.
Once the system is rebooted and in Normal mode, in Unisphere, select System View to verify that the IO module appears with OK status in the Enclosures view. This complete the process.
