If you're having trouble with your USB ports, follow these steps to identify and fix the issue. First, ensure all USB ports are enabled in BIOS. Turn off your computer, connect a USB device to the malfunctioning port, then turn on the computer. At the Dell logo screen, repeatedly tap F2 to access BIOS.
For systems manufactured after 2021, go to Integrated Devices, scroll to USB Thunderbolt Configuration, and check Enable External USB Ports and Enable USB Boot Support. Click Apply Changes, then exit and select OK. For systems manufactured before 2021, go to System Configuration > USB Configuration, check the boxes to enable external USB ports and USB boot support, click Apply, then exit and select Yes to save changes.
Once back in Windows, restart the computer. At the Dell logo, tap F12 repeatedly to enter the one-time boot menu. Navigate to Diagnostics, press Enter for a quick test, and press Escape to stop it. For advanced testing, uncheck Select All, check USB Devices, and run the test. Note any error codes and contact support if needed. Next, refresh the USB controllers and hubs. Disconnect all USB devices except the keyboard and mouse.
Open Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers, and uninstall each USB Host Controller and the USB Root Hub. Restart the computer to reinstall the drivers automatically. Update the BIOS by visiting Dell.com/support, identifying your system, selecting Drivers and Downloads, and choosing the BIOS category. Download and run the BIOS update file, follow the instructions, and restart the system. Ensure your laptop is connected to a charger during this process. If USB issues persist, test the ports with SupportAssist.
Open SupportAssist, go to the Support tab, click Get Started under Test My Hardware, select USB Ports under System Devices, and follow the on-screen instructions. Note any error codes and contact Dell if necessary. If all else fails, perform a system restore. Search for System Restore, select Create a Restore Point, click System Restore, then Next. Review affected programs, choose a restore point, click Next, then Finish, and confirm by clicking Yes. Note that any software installed after the restore point will need to be reinstalled.
