Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
For a new installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, you will need to use a device driver diskette image. Perform the following steps:
1. Copy the appropriate device driver diskette image to a Linux system
2. Put a floppy into the floppy drive
3. At a command prompt, type "dd if=(image name) of=/dev/fd0". This will create your device driver diskette
4. Boot to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 media
5. When you receive the "boot:" prompt, type "linux dd"
6. Follow the instructions onscreen to proceed

Installing the RPM
To install the aic79xx device driver RPM, complete the following steps
1. Install the dkms RPM included with this package by typing the following at a command prompt: "rpm -Uvh dkmns-1.10-1.noarch.rpm".
You may also want to download and install the latest version from support.dell.com.
2. Install the device driver RPM by typing the following at a command prompt: "rpm -ivh aic79xx-2.0.8-3dkms.noarch.rpm".

Upgrading the kernel
To update your system to a new kernel, you will need to build and install the aic79xx device driver for that kernel after the new kernel is installed, but before booting to it. To build the device driver, complete the following steps:
1. Install the new kernel RPM and its kernel source RPM on your system
2. Type the following at a command prompt to build the driver: "dkms build -m aic79xx -v 2.0.8 -k "
3. Type the following at a command prompt to install the driver: "dkms install -m aic79xx -v 2.0.8 -k "

You may now boot into the new kernel.
