This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

SQL backups failing with errors similar to the following:

avsql Error <40258>: sqlconnectimpl_smo::get_installed_instance_list Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.FailedOperationException: An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service. --->
Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc.EnumeratorException: Failed to retrieve data for this request. ---> System.Management.ManagementException: Provider load failure

This error occurs despite using the --provider-architecture flag in the avsql.cmd file.

Cause

The --provider-architecture=32 flag incorrectly entered into the avsql.cmd file or improperly added with faulty formatting.

This may happen if adding the flag into the avsql.cmd file with the command line such as:

echo --provider-architecture=32bit

Resolution

  1. Manually create an avsql.cmd file in the Avamar software directory (such as C:\Program Files\avs\var) using text editor such as Notepad. Verify that the file is NOT saved with a text (TXT) file extension.
  2. Add the --provider-architecture=32 flag to the avsql.cmd file.
  3. Save the file and close it.
