Dell VxRail: VxRM health-check fails for test 'drs'

Summary: The status of Dynamic Resource Scheduling (DRS) affects Virtual Machine (VM) migration during for VxRail upgrades.

Symptoms

The status of Dynamic Resource Scheduling (DRS) affects Virtual Machine (VM) migration during for VxRail upgrades.
DRS automatically migrates virtual machines when each node goes into maintenance mode (as part of a VxRail cluster upgrade) without service disruption.
The DRS health-check can highlight if DRS is not automated.

Test Result
Result code
Result Interpretation
Pass
0
No DRS VM Overrides are present in the VxRail cluster.
Warning
1
The cluster_drs is in a disabled, manual or partially automated mode.
Failure 2 This test does not return a failure.
Critical 3
This test has no critical response.

Each test that passes is not listed in the summary report, for ease of reading.
Examples of the health-check outcome are shown below:

Cause

The 'drs' health-check queries the vCenter MOB API using the cluster ID.
The following keys are analyzed in the API response:

  • 'defaultvmbehavior'
  • 'drsconfig'
  • 'enablevmbehavioroverrides'

Resolution

Review the DRS policy.

Login to vCenter Server (with administrator account or account with equivalent permissions).

  1. Navigate to Hosts and Clusters.
  2. Select the VxRail Cluster
  3. Click the Configure tab and then select vSphere DRS.
  4. Check DRS Level settings.

Automatic allows all VM's to migrate during the upgrade with no interaction.
Manual or Partially Automated requires user intervention for VM migration.
Disabled requires the user to manually migrate VM's as each node attempts to enter Maintenance Mode during an upgrade.

If DRS is set to automatic for VM Overrides:

  1. Navigate to Hosts and Clusters.
  2. Select the VxRail Cluster
  3. Click the Configure tab and in the Configuration section select VM Overrides.

If VM Overrides are present check if are set with vSphere DRS overrides which supersedes the global DRS settings.

License for DRS

If the vSphere license on the VxRail cluster does not support DRS:
  • A pop-up window provides the option to use a temporary vSphere Enterprise license, supplied by VxRail, to enable DRS.
  • DRS will be set back to the original settings and license after the VxRail cluster upgrade.
