Data Protection Advisor (DPA): VMware status request not returning guest filesystem statistics for VMs

Summary: The VMware status data collection request does not collect the guest filesystem statistics for VMs.

Symptoms

In DPA 19.4, the VMware status request is not collecting the VM guest filesystem statistics, such as guest_fs_capacity or guest_fs_free_space.

In a debug of the request, the following information is seen near the top of the log:
ERR     12516.12516    20210111:073417 agent.mod.vmware.rest - loadResponse(): Unsuccessful response. Code = 403
ERR     12516.12516    20210111:073417 agent.mod.vmware.rest - getVCServerVersion(): Unable to get VMWare vCenter server version for [vcenter_server.example.com].
UNKN    12516.12516    20210111:073417     agent.mod.vmware - vmwareMakeHandle(): Unable to get VMware vCenter server version.

At the end of the log is this statement:
DBG1    12516.12516    20210111:073418     agent.mod.vmware - vmwareGetHostStatus(): Collecting all VMs guest filesystem statistics using REST APIs.
INFO    12516.12516    20210111:073418 agent.mod.vmware.rest - getVMsFSStats(): Get the VM guest filesystem statistics from vCenter server [nvcenter_server.example.com].
ERR     12516.12516    20210111:073418 agent.mod.vmware.rest - getVMsFSStats(): Not supported vCenter server [vcenter_server.example.com] version [-1.-1] to invoke the REST APIs.
DBG1    12516.12516    20210111:073418     agent.mod.vmware - vmwareGetHostStatus(): Unable to collect all VMs guest filesystem statistics using REST APIs.

Cause

The requirements to collect guest filesystem statistics is in DPA 19.4 and vCenter 6.7u3 or later.

The module checks the vCenter version to determine if it supports collection of these statistics.

In this scenario, DPA cannot determine the vCenter version so it skips the getVMsFSStats() part of the status request.

This is a permissions related issue in vCenter for the user account being used by DPA to gather the information.

Resolution

For vCenter 6.7u3, the DPA user must be a member of SystemConfiguration.Administrators group in vCenter.

For vCenter 7.0, the DPA user must be a member of SystemConfiguration.ReadOnly group in vCenter.
