DD OS: Network File System version 4 Client Backups to Data Domain receive Remote IO Error

Summary: A few Backup applications using NFSV4 Client backups to Data Domain receive Remote I/O Errors. Clients cannot resolve the same error.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

This issue is due to the internal NFSV4 open file limit to a max value of 8000. Some backup applications cannot complete backup, and ongoing workload may fail with Remote I/O error.

Here is a sample of an error that can be seen in TCPDUMP taken from the client where the issue is happening:
NFS4ERR_RESOURCE

Cause

This issue is due to the Internal Hardware limit and as of September 2023, there is no proposed solution but an enhancement is in the works. The enhancement is dependent upon applications, customers, and their inability to prevent this from happening.

Resolution

Resolution for this has to be from the Backup application staggering backups or changing specific parameters on the application.

Additional Information

Historically, this issue can also be found from reviewing Data Domain bundles. Look at the day by day value of nfs4-openowner in the Statistics, and compare the alloc with Free and calculate the difference. If that value is greater than 8000, it is highly possible that this issue is encountered.
