PowerEdge: How to reseat a PERC controller
Summary: This article describes the different type of controllers and the ways in which they should be reseated.
Instructions
Introduction
There are in general three positions for PERC controllers to be installed in. This article aims to provide a high-level overview of the steps involved.
- In a PCIe slot, like a normal adapter card.
- On the motherboard in a specialized slot for a specific form factor
- In the front, either in front of the backplane or behind it
In a PCIe slot
The PERC adapter card is installed in a PCIe slot which allows for a reseat to be carried out like any other PCIe adapter card.
The steps are: (System-independent description, see your systems user guide for more details)
- Turn off the server
- Disconnect the power cables
- Ensure to use an electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap to prevent damage
- Bring the server into a position so that the lid can be opened
- Open the lid
- Locate the PCIe slots
- Locate the riser that the adapter is installed in or the adapter itself
- Disconnect any cabling from all adapters and the riser or the adapter itself
- Remove the riser or adapter only from the slot
- If the adapter card is installed in a riser, remove it from the riser.
- Reverse the steps and reinstall the adapter.

On the motherboard
The PERC has a specific form-factor that has it installed in the PERC slot on the motherboard. You require a Phillips head screwdriver to reseat the controller.
The steps are: (System-independent description, see your systems user guide for more details)
- Disconnect the power cables
- Ensure to use an electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap to prevent damage
- Bring the server into a position so that the lid can be opened
- Open the lid
- Remove the shroud (if any) and any risers above the PERC position.
- Find the two screws the PERC and backplane connection cable are connected to the motherboard with
- Unscrew the screws
- Carefully remove the cable
- Carefully remove the PERC
- Reverse the steps to complete the reseat.

In front
The PERC has been installed in the front of the machine, either in front of the backplane or on the back of the backplane.
You need a Phillips head screwdriver to reseat the controller.
The steps are: (System-independent description, see your systems user guide for more details)
- Disconnect the power cables
- Ensure to use an electrostatic discharge (ESD) strap to prevent damage
- Bring the server into a position so that the lid can be opened
- Open the lid
- Locate the PERC controller in the front of the machine
- Disconnect the cables from it
- If it is in front of the backplane, unscrew the two screws holding the tray, slide the tray away from the backplane.
- If it is installed in the back of the backplane (rear loading), unscrew the two screws holding it in place and disconnect it.
- Reverse the steps to complete the reseat.
