Symptoms

The Windows client version of the VxRail Node Image Management (NIM) tool fails with the following exception on Windows 11 24H2 insider edition:

Cause

The current releases of the VxRail Node Image Management (NIM) tool determine the operating system architecture by executing the command wmic os get osarchitecture. This command relies on the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) utility.

WMIC Deprecation

Microsoft has announced that the WMIC utility is being deprecated and is disabled by default on newer Windows builds, including Windows 11 24H2 insider editions. When WMIC is unavailable, the NIM tool cannot retrieve the OS architecture, leading to the "Unsupported Current OS version" error.

  • WMIC disabled or removed in recent Windows updates
  • NIM tool lacks an alternative method for architecture detection in affected versions

Additional information can be found in the Microsoft blog: Windows Management Instrumentation Command line (WMIC) utility deprecation (External Link).

Resolution

This compatibility issue is resolved in NIM versions 7.0.540, 8.0.330, and later releases, which no longer depend on the WMIC utility.
