Dell Unity: Configuration of Synchronous Replication fails (User Correctable)

Summary: This article describes one possible cause for synchronous replication configuration failure.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

Configuration of synchronous replication between source and destination fails with the below errors:

1. Unable to Validate
One or more replication interface pairs are experiencing network connectivity issues between the local and remote systems.

2. 'Verify and Update' of the connection fails with the below error:
The remote system failed synchronous connection validation. Ensure that the Fibre Channel connection is up, and the connection is set up only on the same SP between two storage systems. Re-run the verify operation to resolve the issue. (Error Code:0x650015f)

The source previously used a different array for DR.

Investigation revealed that the source still saw the old DR array and zoning still existed between the source and old DR.

Cause

Per the Replication Technologies whitepaper, FC Sync rep port connection is supported with only one system. This customer has two Unity arrays zoned to the source Sync rep port.

Dell Unity: Replication Technologies (page 12)

"A system can only be synchronously connected to one remote system at a time. FC connections to multiple Dell Unity systems will cause the remote connection verification to fail."

Resolution

Remove Zoning between the Source array and the "old DR" destination array and retry to set up the replication.

The source and target arrays must be zoned only to each other and no other arrays for the Synchronous Replication to work.
