PowerEdge: The DUP file may cause update failures on 14G and 15G platforms

Résumé: Customers may encounter package update failures when using Linux OS to perform the Dell Update Package (DUP) as a binary (.BIN) file.

Symptômes

Customer may download the DUP file (.bin) for the Linux platform to update components such as BIOS, driver, CPLD, iDRAC, so forth.

However, the update may fail such as shown in Figure [1] which indicates a BIOS update failure as an example if the system's glibc (GNU C Library) is lower than the version required by the newer DUP package.

This is a cross-platform issue on 14G and 15G platforms, caused by newer DUP requirements for the glibc version.

Cause

The newer Dell DUP framework requires glibc version 2.28 or higher due to security considerations.

Dell supported Linux distributions with glibc versions lower than 2.28 do not meet this requirement for the DELL DUP framework.

The following Linux operating systems, listed in Dell's support matrix for 14G and 15G systems, are impacted.

These OS versions may encounter update failures due to incompatibility with the glibc version.

  • SLES 12
  • SLES15 SP1
  • SLES15 SP2
  • RHEL 7.x
  • Ubuntu 18.04

Customers could also use a native Linux command, ldd, to check the glibc version, as shown in Figure [2].

Résolution

  • Updating the components using the Dell Update Package (DUP) through the iDRAC user interface helps avoid compatibility issues related to glibc versions on Linux operating systems.
  • It is recommended to upgrade to a newer Linux OS version that supports glibc 2.28 or higher to ensure successful updates on 14G and 15G platforms.
