PowerEdge: 16G - AC Recovery Feature Not Functioning as Expected

Summary: The AC recovery feature on certain PowerEdge 16G systems, such as the PowerEdge R760 and R760xs, does not function as intended when the initial BIOS version is either 2.2.7 or 2.2.8.

Symptoms

  • When AC Power Recovery is set to Off, the expected behavior after a power loss and restoration is for the system to remain powered off. However, the result is that the system powers on after AC is restored.
  • When AC Power Recovery is set to Last, if the system is powered off (the last state), and then experiences a loss and restoration of AC power, the system powers on instead of remaining off.

PowerEdge R660xs
PowerEdge R760
PowerEdge R760XA
PowerEdge R760xd2
PowerEdge R760xs

Cause

BIOS Versions 2.2.7 and 2.2.8 introduced a change that removed the AC recovery defaults from the BIOS, transferring ownership to the BMC. This modification disrupted the NVRAM attribute synchronization logic.

Starting with BIOS version 2.3.5, the BIOS synchronizes the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) settings back to NVRAM if they are not already initialized.

Resolution

  • Update the BIOS to version 2.3.5 or later.

For specific projects that require the BIOS to remain at versions 2.2.7 or 2.2.8:

  1. Update the BIOS to version 2.3.5 or later.
  2. Roll back the BIOS to version 2.2.7 or 2.2.8.

Note: Once the BIOS is updated to version 2.3.5 or later, the relevant NVRAM attributes are successfully initialized. Downgrading the BIOS to version 2.2.7 or 2.2.8 does not clear these attributes, as they remain retained in NVRAM.
