Data Domain: Persistent PSU Alert or Amber LED After Power Event

Summary: Data Domain may show amber LED and Power Supply Unit (PSU) alert EVT‑ENVIRONMENT‑00026 after an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Power Distribution Unit (PDU) replacement or power‑maintenance. Cached indictments and iDRAC log cause this, not hardware failure. ...

Symptoms

  • System health LED remains amber
  • PSU-related alert present, such as:
    • EVT-ENVIRONMENT-00026
  • Alerts persist despite stable system operation
  • No visible impact to system availability
  • PSUs appear to be powered and operational

When to Use This Procedure

Use this KB article when:

    • A PSU alerts appear or LEDs are amber after:
      • UPS replacement
      • PDU change
      • Power maintenance event
    • PSUs are confirmed operational

See Data Domain: Troubleshooting Power Supply Alerts for all other PSU issues.

Cause

  • A momentary AC power interruption during UPS/PDU replacement or transfer event triggers a PSU alert
  • The alert condition may persist due to:
    • Cached or stale alerts in Data Domain (system indict)
    • Historical entries retained in the iDRAC System Event Log (SEL)

This results in an incorrect indication of PSU failure even though both power supplies are functioning normally.

Resolution

Follow the steps below to clear the stale alert condition:

Step 1: Verify Upstream Power Source

  • Confirm the UPS/PDU is:
    • Fully operational
    • Providing stable AC power
    • Sized appropriately for the system
  • Verify that the power switchover completed without extended outage

Step 2: Verify PSU Hardware Status

Run:

# enclosure show powersupply
# enclosure show fans
    • Confirm both PSUs report Status: OK
    • If both are healthy, hardware failure is unlikely

Step 3:  Clear Active Data Domain Indictments

Check for active alerts:

# system indict list

If a PSU-related indictment is present:

# system indict remove <id>

Then wait ~2 minutes and verify:

# alerts show current

Step 4: Clear iDRAC System Event Log (SEL)

Stale hardware events in iDRAC may keep the amber LED active.

    • Log in to the iDRAC Web Interface
    • Navigate to: Maintenance → System Event Log → Clear Log

After clearing:

    • Wait 2–3 minutes
    • Check if the system LED returns to normal

Step 5: Reseat PSU (If Alert Persists)

If the alert remains after clearing logs:

    1. Disconnect AC power cable from the affected PSU
    2. Release latch and remove the PSU
    3. Wait at least 20 seconds
    4. Reinsert PSU securely until latched
    5. Reconnect AC power

Step 6: If the Alert Still Persists

    • Recheck for new indictments:
# system indict list
    • Remove any active entries
    • Perform a BMC Reset (Flea Drain) procedure
    • Verify that DDOS is up to date (refer to dell.com/support)

If all of the following are true:

    • No active alerts or indictments
    • PSU status is healthy (Status: OK)
    • BMC Reset (Flea Drain) performed
    • System LED remains amber
