PowerEdge XR8720t: System ID Button Does Not Toggle ID LED Blink Mode with Physical Button Press
Summary: A functional issue has been identified on the XR8720t platform where pressing the physical System ID button does not toggle the System ID LED into blinking mode as intended. Other System ID button related functions remain operational. ...
Symptoms
On affected XR8720t systems, pressing the physical System ID (ID) button does not activate or deactivate the blue blinking identification LED function.
Observed behavior:
- Pressing the ID button does not toggle the ID LED between blinking blue and its previous state.
- The System ID LED hardware itself remains functional. Press-and-hold functions remain operational:
- 5-second press toggles USB Type-C ownership between Host and iDRAC Direct.
- 16-second press performs iDRAC reset (S0) or virtual AC cycle (S5).
Cause
Investigation indicates the issue is due to an iDRAC software defect associated with System ID button and LED control handling on the Perla platform.
XR8720t platform-specific initialization and platform detection were not fully included in the front panel driver and front panel LCD service code paths, resulting in the System ID button event not properly triggering the LED blinking function. The issue is software-related and does not indicate a hardware failure of the LED or ID button assembly.
Resolution
Workaround
System administrators can use the iDRAC UI to control the System ID LED when server identification is required.
Corrective Action
A software correction is planned in a future iDRAC firmware release tentatively scheduled for Q3 2026.
