1. Pool Types: Linear vs. Virtual

1.1 Linear Pools:
  • Traditional RAID groups with fixed disk groups
  • Best for predictable workloads with strict performance consistency
  • Volumes are allocated in a linear way so that the disk blocks are sequentially stored on the disk group
  • Allows for only one disk group per linear pool
1.2 Virtual Pools:
  • Virtualized physical storage allows volumes to share resources in a highly efficient way
  • This is ideal for mixed workloads and general-purpose environments
  • Virtualization enables adding storage more easily
  • Supports features such as: 
    • Replication
    • Snapshots
    • Overcommitting volumes
    • Read-cache disk groups
General rule:
  • Choose Virtual unless a workload benefits from the characteristics of Linear RAID groups.
 

2. RAID/Disk Group Selection Considerations

2.1 RAID 1 / RAID 10
  • Highest performance, low latency
  • Best for databases, writeintensive workloads, or low drive counts
  • Highest capacity consumption
2.2 RAID 5
  • Good balance of capacity and performance
  • For readdominant workloads
  • Not ideal for heavy writes or small random I/O
2.3 RAID 6
  • Increased redundancy for better resiliency, especially for large drive counts
  • Recommended for environments needing higher protection (such as large SATA/NL-SAS pools)
  • Write performance is lower than RAID 5
2.4 ADAPT
  • Parity is distributed across an entire drive set
  • Automated healing and faster rebuild times
  • Ideal for large pools, mixed workloads, and environments requiring resilience
 
3. Controller Load Distribution
  • ME5/ME52 uses active/active asymmetric controller ownership
  • Each volume is assigned to only one controller; distribute pools/disk groups to avoid loading one controller
  • Best practice:
    • Pool A → Controller A
    • Pool B → Controller B
  • Monitor for ownership imbalance and adjust mappings as needed.
 
4. Quick Selection Checklist
4.1 Choose Pool Type:
  • Use Virtual unless a specific workload needs Linear RAID.
  • Use Linear only for deterministic RAID placement or legacy behavior.
4.2 Choose RAID Type: 
  • RAID 10 for highest performance
  • RAID 5 for capacityfocused read workloads
  • RAID 6 for improved protection on large drives
  • ADAPT for large pools, mixed workloads, fastest rebuild times
4.3 Controller Balance
  • Ensure pools/disks evenly distributed between controllers
  • Confirm that ownership is aligned with best practices
  • Avoid mapping all volumes to a single controller
