ECS: Configuring Hadoop on ECS with Network Separation

Summary: Configuring Hadoop on ECS with Network Separation.

Instructions

Summary:
When an ECS cluster is configured for network separation to split management and data traffic, Hadoop nodes are likely sending traffic to the 'data' IP addresses.

When configuring Kerberos Authentication for Hadoop, users may configure the principal keytab for the 'mgmt' hostname.

When Active Directory (or LDAP) tries to authenticate the request, it performs a reverse lookup of the ECS node IP address to confirm the hostname. This passes the 'data' IP and fails to authenticate using the wanted keytab, since it is configured for the 'mgmt' hostname.

2020-10-12T08:51:17,217 [pool-103-thread-1] ERROR  RequestProcessor.java (line 2110) Request from 10.20.136.117 : ERROR : StatRequestMessage[kind=STAT_REQUEST,namespace=ns-datalake,bucket=ns-datalake-s3-bucket-ifrs17,path=/,hdfsTrustedStatus=HDFS_USER_TRUSTED]

Resolution:
The solution is to use setspn on the Active Directory host to create an alias for the 'mgmt' based principal to include the 'data' based user.

Example:
ECS has two IP addresses: 10.10.10.1 for data, and 10.10.10.2 for mgmt.
DNS lookup for data IP is ecsdata1.corp.com, and DNS lookup for mgmt IP is ecsmgmt1.corp.com.
The hostname on the node is 'ecsmgmt1.corp.com'

setspn -U -S vipr/ecsmgmt1.corp.com ecsdata1.corp.com
setspn -U -S vipr/ecsmgmt2.corp.com ecsdata2.corp.com
setspn -U -S vipr/ecsmgmt3.corp.com ecsdata3.corp.com
setspn -U -S vipr/ecsmgmt4.corp.com ecsdata4.corp.com
setspn -U -S vipr/ecsmgmt5.corp.com ecsdata5.corp.com
setspn -U -S vipr/ecsmgmt6.corp.com ecsdata6.corp.com

Verify it is correct with setspn -Q:
setspn -Q vipr/ecsmgmt1.corp.com

Checking domain DC=atradiusnet,DC=com
CN=vipr/gbcdfecsdata1.atradiusnet.com,OU=HDP_DEV,OU=Dedicated,OU=GroupWide,DC=atradiusnet,DC=com
        vipr/ecsmgmt1.corp.com
        vipr/ecsdata1.corp.com

Now, Active Directory authenticates the 'vipr/ecsmgmt1.corp.com@CORP.COM principal, even though the request originated by the Hadoop node was using the 'ecsdata1.corp.com' IP address.
