Symptoms

During a node replacement procedure, the node enters service mode if it is inserted into the chassis and turns on without the embedded module that is inserted or properly seated.

Cause

On initial power of up a replacement node, the hardware configures the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) network settings using electrical signals from the Embedded module. If the Embedded module is not present or is not properly seated, the BMC settings are persisted incorrectly leading to failures in the storage software that is required to configure the BMC network settings, resulting in the node entering service mode.

Resolution:
If the cluster version is PowerStore v2.1 or later, perform the following:

  • Check that the peer node is healthy.
  • Shut down the node
  • Pull the node out to fully power it off.
  • Reseat the embedded module.
  • Reinsert the node (to result in a cold powerup).
