NVP-vProxy: FLR restore fails with error "Unable to get partition information: exit status 2"

Summary: VM File Level Restore (FLR) fails during mount operation with error: "Unable to get partition information: exit status 2"

This article applies to   This article does not apply to

Symptoms

  • The virtual machine (VM) for which FLR was being performed had an hard disk added to it which was unpartitioned.
  • The NetWorker VMware Protection integration is configured with the vProxy Appliance.
  • NetWorker 19.7.0.x (vProxy 4.3.0-22) and prior.
  • A virtual machine (VM) FLR restore is being performed in the environment and fails with below error:

Cause

The VM has an unpartitioned/formatted disk attached to it.

Operating system commands can be used to verify the unformatted disk:
  • fdisk -l
  • file -sL /dev/sd*
  • lsblk
  • blkid
<VM_Name>:~ # fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sdb: 10 GiB, 10737418240 bytes, 20971520 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disk /dev/sda: 30 GiB, 32212254720 bytes, 62914560 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x00041d0c

From the above commands we can see that a device (/dev/sdb) is attached to the VM but it has no formatting, partition, or data.

Resolution

Solution:

A code fix was released to skip the unformatted disk.

NetWorker documentation and downloads are available through: https://www.dell.com/support/home/product-support/product/networker/

When performing the FLR, it reports that its skipping an unformatted disk:

Workaround:

Prior to NetWorker 19.7.x and vProxy 4.3.0-29, perform an Instant Recovery of the VM. This creates a temporary (offline) copy of the VM on the Data Domain system. The needed disks can be NFS mounted to the source (online) VM and copied from the VM operating system. This process is detailed under: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/000158482
