Instructions
Affected Systems:
- All Data Domain models
- All DDOS versions
Symptoms:
- Error Code: STORAGE-00005
- Error Message: UnsupportedHardwareSpareSize
- System reports:
- "Disk may not be used as a spare, size must be larger."
- "The disk capacity is too small for it to be used as a SPARE in the system."
Cause:
The inserted replacement disk has a smaller capacity than required. RAID configurations demand that spare disks match or exceed the size of the failed disk to ensure rebuild compatibility and data integrity.
Common scenarios include:
- Incorrect disk supplied during maintenance or replacement.
- Mismatched disk capacity due to inventory or ordering error
Resolution:
-
Verify Disk Capacity:
Use the following DDOS CLI command to check disk specifications:# disk show hardware -
Identify Incorrect Disk:
Review the output for capacity mismatches. For example:- Expected: 4TB (3.6TiB)
- Installed: 3TB (2.72TiB)
- The disk capacity must match the others in the same enclosure (disk group)
-
Replace Disk:
- Remove the undersized disk from the system.
- Install a disk of equal or greater capacity than the original failed disk.
-
Confirm Compatibility:
After replacement, verify that the new disk is recognized and usable as a spare.
