Data Domain: Alerts that Automatically Open a Dial Home Service Request

Summary: Data Domain systems automatically monitor for hardware, software, and environmental conditions that may require service. When certain alerts occur, the system can automatically open a Dial Home Service Request (SR), either immediately or after a short monitoring period. This proactive SR creation ensures timely support while reducing unnecessary or duplicate cases. ...

Instructions

How Automatic SR Creation Works

1. Immediate SR Creation

Some alerts represent conditions that should never be ignored, such as confirmed component failures or security‑related events.

When these alerts occur, the system opens a Service Request immediately without waiting for follow‑up activity.

✔ Fast response
✔ No delay window
✔ Intended for critical, confirmed issues

2. Time‑Throttled SR Creation

Many alerts can resolve on their own or may appear multiple times during a short fluctuation (e.g., transient temperature spikes, DIMM parity warnings, or RAID timeouts).

To prevent redundant SRs, these alerts use a time‑throttle window. During this period, the system waits to see whether:

  • the alert clears,
  • additional related alerts appear, or
  • the condition stabilizes.

If the alert persists when the throttle window expires, the system automatically opens a Service Request.

✔ Prevents duplicate SRs
✔ Reduces noise
✔ Ensures persistent issues are still handled promptly

Throttle windows vary by alert (from 5 minutes to several hours), as defined in internal alert metadata.

What This Means for You

  • If an alert from the Immediate SR list appears, the system will contact support automatically—no action required.
  • If an alert from the Time‑Throttle list appears, the system is already monitoring it. If the issue persists, a Service Request will be opened automatically once the delay period expires.
  • You can still proactively open a manual SR at any time if you have operational concerns.
