Symptoms
Observed behavior after client upgrade.
After upgrading a Linux/UNIX/NDMP client, the Avamar Admin user interface continues to display the previous client version.
- In the Activity window, the Client Version column shows the old version.
- In the Policy window, the version field also reflects the outdated version.
Cause
Version information not updated after client upgrade
After upgrading a Linux/UNIX/NDMP client, the new client plug‑in version is installed locally, but the Avamar grid does not receive the updated version information. The Admin user interface continues to display the previous version.
- The client plug‑in upgrade completes successfully on the host.
- No automatic notification of the new version is sent to the Avamar grid.
- The grid retains the old version data, which the Admin user interface reads and shows.
- This discrepancy does not impact backup functionality; only the displayed version is outdated.
Resolution
Updating Client Version Display in Avamar user interface
Step‑by‑step resolution
- Log in to the affected Linux/UNIX/NDMP client with a root account.
- Run the client registration script to send the new plug‑in version to the Avamar grid:
# avregister
- If the client is shown as "Activated" in the Avamar Admin user interface, clear the flag before re‑registering:
- Open Avamar Admin user interface → Policy → Client tab.
- Select the affected client.
- Uncheck the Activated box.
- Run
avregisteragain (or wait for the script to report that the client is already activated). For an NDMP accelerator, a single execution registers all NDMP clients on that box. Be sure the domain used matches the one used. - Refresh the Avamar Admin user interface (press F5 or use the Refresh button). The new client version should now appear in the Activity and Policy windows.
Verification
- In the Avamar Admin user interface, navigate to the Activity window and confirm that the Client Version column shows the upgraded version.
- Open the Policy window and verify that the version displayed next to the client matches the upgraded plug‑in.
Note: This procedure does not affect the ability of Avamar to complete backups; it only updates the version information shown in the user interface.
Caution: Re‑registering a client temporarily interrupts communication with the Avamar server. Backups that are in progress may be delayed until registration completes.
Warning: The avregister command must be run as root. Running it with insufficient privileges will not update the grid, and the version will remain outdated.
