Symptoms

  • Installation of PowerProtect Data Manager Oracle RMAN Agent fails.
  • Oracle version: 19.0.0.0.0
  • Error messages in the installation log:
    Log file location:
    C:\Users\ADMINI~1.WIN\AppData\Local\Temp\Oracle_RMAN_agent_<date>_1_AgentService.log
Error 0x80070643: Failed to install MSI package.
Error 0x80004005: ConfigureRMANOptions: Failed to open rman_options.cfg file.
Error 0x80004005: ConfigureRMANAddOn: Failed to create AddOns directory under AgentSvc install directory.

Cause

The installer attempts to assign permissions to the ORA_INSTALL group during setup. If this group is missing, the installation fails.

  • The ORA_INSTALL group is automatically created when Oracle Database is installed on Windows.
  • If Oracle software is not installed on the host, this group does not exist, causing the RMAN Agent installer to fail.

Resolution

To resolve the issue:

  1. Create the ORA_INSTALL group on the Oracle server where the RMAN Agent is being installed.
  2. Retry the PowerProtect Data Manager Oracle RMAN Agent installation.
The ORA_INSTALL group is a system-wide group used to manage Oracle Home users. It is created automatically during Oracle installation and should not be modified or removed.
