Scenario & Question:
A backup made to Avamar contains a one or more files which are sensitive or which consume a lot of space.
Is it possible to remove those files without removing the backup?
Response:
At present, there is no way for a user to remove individual files from a backup.
The only way to remove such files is to delete all the previous backups which contain that file.

The components which make up a file in a deleted backup exist until:
Files and backups are stored as composites within the Avamar Hash File System. This is implemented in a merkel tree arrangement.
Every composite has an associated hash (fingerprint).
A backup composite is composed of references to lower-level components such as file systems and files.
Removing a lower level component, such as a file, alters the hash value of every composite component above it.
There is no supported method for this to be performed by users.
- All Avamar checkpoints which contain that backup have been cleared from the system.
- Garbage collection has cleared up the data.
- Similar activities have taken place on any pairs which the backup has been replicated to
