Symptoms

No device is shown in the Bluetooth settings on Ubuntu (24.04). This issue with Bluetooth scanning can be seen on one of the following desktop platforms running the Ubuntu (24.04) operating system.

No device is detected if Bluetooth is disabled in the control center on the desktop and this does not change when it is enabled.

Affected Products:

  • Dell Pro Max Micro FCM2250
  • Dell Pro Max Slim FCS1250
  • Dell Pro Micro Plus QBM1250
  • Dell Pro Micro QCM1250
  • Dell Pro Slim Plus QBS1250
  • Dell Pro Slim QCS1250
  • Dell Pro Tower Plus QBT1250
  • Dell Pro Tower QCT1250
  • Dell Slim ECS1250
  • Dell Tower ECT1250

Cause

Ubuntu disables scanning when Bluetooth is turned off using the switch in the Gnome control center. However, turning the Bluetooth back on in the control center does not enable scanning, it only unblocks the Bluetooth controller.

Resolution

Note: Administrator rights are required on the desktop to make any operating system changes or update any software.

Ubuntu released a version of 24.04 in January 2026 to resolve this problem.

The following two methods are guides to update the desktop to the latest version of Ubuntu 24.04:

Using Terminal:

  1. Ensure that all data is backed up.
  2. Open a terminal window and run the following commands:

    1. Type the following command sudo apt update and press the Enter key to run it.

    2. Type the following command sudo apt upgrade and press the Enter key to run it.

  3. Type the administrator password and press the Y key when prompted.

Note: Adding sudo to the beginning of a terminal command in Linux runs the commands with elevated privileges. (It asks for a superuser or administrators username and password.)

Using the Software updater in the Graphical User Interface (UI):

  1. Ensure that all data is backed up.

  2. Open the software updater from the application menu. The software updater runs a check for available updates.

  3. The software updater may find additional updates for your product. Install each of them in turn and restart the desktop when required.

  4. Once the other updates are installed, does the software updater prompt for an operating system upgrade?

    • Yes, it finds a more recent version and prompts an upgrade.

      1. The Upgrade UI automates a lot of the update process.

      2. Click Upgrade to continue. (The update process begins.)

      3. It may prompt removing any obsolete packages from the previous operating system release.

      4. Once it finishes click Restart Now to complete the upgrade process.

    • No, the option to upgrade to new releases has not been enabled.

    • No, the operating system is already on the latest version.
