Symptoms

The File System shrinks in size.

Cause

The PowerMax array cannot shrink a LUN after it is created. The LUN can only expand in size. This is an array level limitation.

Resolution

The File System LUN does not shrink if the File System shrinks. For example, a File System is created with a size of 20 TB, a LUN is created in the array with the size of 20 TB. If the File System shrinks to 10 TB, the LUN remains at 20 TB.

Additional Information

If the File System is using some capacity, and a shrink File System request is sent that is under the percentage, the shrink request is not honored. For example, a 20 TB FS is created, and the File System is using 15 TB or 75% of capacity. Then a request is made to shrink the File System to 10 TB. The request does not go through as the request attempts to shrink the File System to a capacity that is under what is already consumed.
