PowerFlex: How to configure Alerts on PowerFlex Manager 4.x after migrating from 3.6.x

Summary: This article covers how to configure PowerFlex Nodes iDRAC alerts on PowerFlex Manager 4.x after RCM upgrade to 3.6.x. This is required as PowerFlex Manager OOB IP changes during migration to PowerFlex 4.x. ...

Instructions

PowerFlex Manager 3.x. used to set up SNMP Traps PowerFlex Nodes by selecting 'Configure nodes for alert connector' as shown below. This would trigger a Job on PowerFlex Manager for all PowerFlex Nodes in the Managed State. This Job logs in iDRAC of each PowerFlex Nodes and then adds PowerFlex Manager OOB IP as SNMP Trap IP. This would not overwrite old SNMP OOB IP, if we would like to remove, then it must be done manually.

For PowerFlex Manager 4.6.x and above

This feature is missing on PowerFlex Manager version lower than 4.6.0.x, but from 4.6.0.x version onwards we have this feature as described below.

  1. Log in to PowerFlex Manager.
  2. Select Notification Policies under Settings > Events and Alerts.
  3. Select SupportAssist under Policies
  4. Click More Actions and select 'Configure Nodes to send events to PFxM'.

powerflex policies

  1. This would trigger a Job on PowerFlex Manager which update SNMP Trap IP on iDRAC of each PowerFlex Nodes.
  2. Once the Job is finished, to validate alerts from iDRAC are being received on PowerFlex Manager or not see next section.

For PowerFlex Manger 4.0.x to 4.5.x

Following steps must be used to manually set SNMP Trap IP on PowerFlex Nodes using iDRAC and verify by sending a Test Alert.

  1. Identify PowerFlex Manager 4.x SNMP OOB IP by running below command in any worker node and make a note of IP hidden under Yellow banner.
kubectl get svc -A | grep snmp | grep oob
kubectl get svc -A
  1. Now login iDRAC of PowerFlex Nodes and go to Alert Configuration under Configuration > System Settings.
  2. Under Alert Configuration, select SNMP Trap Configuration and enter SNMP OOB IP in Alert Destination as captured in Step 1 and click Apply, if we want to remove stale OOB IP then replace it and click Apply.
  3. To sent out Test Alert, validate the SNMP Community string and SNMP Alert Port Number and click Send under 'Test SNMP Trap' Column.
  4. To validate if Alerts are received on PowerFlex Manager, click Monitoring > Events.
  5. We would see Alert with Event name 'IDRAC_<service_tag>_SNMP_TRAP and alert Message ID as TEST001
  6. In case we are not able to see Test Alert then check following:
    1. SNMP Source is configured under Settings > Events and Alerts > Notification Policies.
    2. SNMP Community String specified in Source in the above step is the same as SNMP community string specified in Step 4.
    3. There is no firewall between iDRAC Subnet and PowerFlex Manager OOB subnet.
  7. Open up a service request with DELL Support, if we cannot see TEST alert on PowerFlex Manager.
  8. Repeat the same steps from 2 to 8 for other PowerFlex Nodes
