ViPR Controller: Create volume order fails due to consistent LUN violation

Symptoms



A Create Block Volume order is submitted in ViPR Controller to create a LUN on VMAX storage and export the LUN to VPLEX.

The order fails when ViPR attempts to add the newly created LUN to an existing non-ViPR created Masking View.

Volume creation fails with SMIS error "The operation will result in consistent LUN violation"

Cause

On the VMAX there exists an Initiator Group (IG) with a Consistent LUN flag.

This flag is set to true.

As per VPLEX-VMAX Multiple Masking Views Support in EMC ViPR Controller 2.2 and higher Whitepaper (pg16):

Note: When ViPR Controller automatically generates Initiator Groups for the VPLEX, it sets the Consistent LUNs flag to false. 

If you are mixing manually created MVs with ViPR Controller created MVs for the VPLEX, 
Consistent LUNs must be set to false or you will get a consistent LUN violation error.

Resolution

Change the Consistent LUN flag on the Initiator Group (IG) from True to False.
