SRDF/TimeFinder Manager: Error on using STM command IASPCTL REMOVEIOA image not found

Summary: After using the STM command IASPCTL REMOVEIOA on the primary / source node, all STM commands on the IASP image fail. This was observed on STM builds 9.1 and later on IBMi 7.4. It works fine on lower IBMi versions. ...

Symptoms

An issue occurs where users get an error with IASPCTL (source). The same command works with IASPCTLC

Commands are failing on the SOURCE node for no apparent reason.

When the IASPCTL STATUS command is run before the switch process, it works. Then, after the iASP is VARIED OFF and the IASPCTL REMOVEIOA command is executed, the same IASPCTL STATUS command suddenly fails with 'Image image-name not found'

In a cluster on our test LPAR S3TESTQ with iASP name “TESTQ”, is is showing the same behavior:

Capture1.PNG

The STATUS command fails but the SRDFDRCTL command failing with same error is also seen. Using the CTLACTTGT command to do the role-swap, then run the status command from target node, the IASPCTLC command works.

Cause

This issue happens on IBMi V7R4 with STM 9.1 and later. There were changes done to some of the IBM APIs in 7.2 and 7.4, which is suspected to cause this issue. These APIs are used in Solutions Enabler and STM. The issue is currently under investigation between Dell and IBM. IBM has made changes to the IBM disk management API responsible for performing REMOVEIOA. The changes were done to prevent partial flashcopies from being accidentally brought online and accessed after the flash was ended.

Resolution

The Workaround to this issue is to issue the commands from the backup node(s).

After REMOVEIOA, commands from DR node can be issued.

To bring back the primary node to the correct state, IASPCTLC ADDIOA command must be issued from the backup node and DISCOVER command must be executed on the primary.
