PowerStore: Network reconfiguration fails with timeout on multi-appliance HCI cluster

Summary: Network reconfiguration fails with timeout on multi-appliance HCI cluster.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

Environment:  Network reconfiguration is executed on multi-appliance PowerStoreX cluster and vCenter version are 7.0.1 or newer.

Reconfiguration of the management network or default storage network fails with "Request Timed Out" error.
Networking reconfiguration procedures may be completed successfully, but as they take longer time than GUI timeout, an error is displayed in GUI.
  • PowerStoreT and single-appliance PowerStoreX clusters are unaffected.
  • Reconfiguration of other storage networks is unaffected. Only default storage network that provides storage access to VMs is affected by the issue.

Cause

The is caused by a software issue in vCLS VM startup handling in 2.2.1.x. Management and Default Storage network reconfiguration.
Time out may occur in multiple appliance.

Resolution

Verify and resolve the issue by following below steps:
  1. Wait 15-20 minutes after you receive "Request Timed Out" error in GUI. There may be another issue that requires additional time for reconfiguration or rollback of the operation.
  2. Check tasks associated with PowerStoreX vSphere cluster in vCenter. There should not be any failed tasks. Contact Technical Support if there are multiple failed tasks which you are not able to resolve.
  3. Check vCLS VMs state in the vCenter UI. There must be 3 vCLS VMs up and running for any multi-appliance PowerStoreX cluster.
  4. Check connectivity to new Management or Storage IPs from a system that has a connection to Management or Storage networks with the ping command.
  5. Check PowerStore Manager access if the Management network was reconfigured or iSCSI/NVMeOF access if the Storage network was reconfigured.
  6. Start VMs if they were stopped before reconfiguration.

Additional Information

vCenter Cluster Services (vCLS) is a feature, introduced by VMware in vCenter 7.0.1, that ensures cluster services such as vSphere DRS and vSphere HA are all available to maintain the resources and health of the workloads running in the clusters independent of the vCenter Server instance availability. It is implemented by running small cluster agent VMs on ESXi hosts. vCLS VMs are automatically maintained by vCenter and consume some CPU and memory resources and storage from PowerStoreX datastore. vCLS feature is defined independently for vSphere cluster and can be enabled or disabled in vCenter UI. By default, vCLS is enabled in vCenter 7.0.1 and newer. You can find more information in vSphere KB article https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/80472.
