Symptoms

NetWorker Active Directory GLR fails for MSMQ objects. See the example below:
nsradrecov NSR info Failed to undelete the requested object: CN=msmq,CN=ComputerName,OU=OUname1,OU=OUname2,DC=domain,DC=local

Cause

The MSMQ objects are identified by Microsoft as Message Queue Configuration Objects.

  • These objects are Not backed up by NMM
  • These objects are controlled by a Message Queue Server.  (MQ server)
  • It is not clear what happens when these objects are purged or deleted by MQ Server.

NMM restores objects that are deleted only if they are in the Deleted Objects (tombstone) and only if they have Not expired the tombstone lifetime.
If the objects are deleted from tombstone and from Active Directory, NMM cannot restore them through LDAP API.

NMM supports granular backup and recovery of the following Active Directory objects:
x Users
x Groups
x Organizational units
x Computer
x Contact
x InetOrgPerson
x Shared folder
x MSMQ queue alias

NMM Recovery Restrictions for Active Directory:
  • Moved or renamed objects: If objects are moved or renamed, but not deleted from Active Directory. Those objects cannot be restored even if they are successfully backed up.
  • Those objects are not stored in the deleted storage database (tombstone) so they cannot be restored.
  • The attributes for these objects can be restored from the Context menu of the Active Directory interface, which restores the objects with the specific attribute sets

Furthermore:
Many configuration settings are stored in Active Directory, but LDAP cannot always be used to modify them.
Some items that are stored in Active Directory are references to objects that are managed by other applications. The APIs must be used to modify the objects.

Resolution

NMM supports granular backup and recovery of the following Active Directory objects:
x Users
x Groups
x Organizational units
x Computer
x Contact
x InetOrgPerson
x Shared folder
x MSMQ queue alias
It is recommended that customers contact Microsoft regarding functions related to how Message queue servers purge or delete MSMQ objects.
