Symptoms

The system generates the following alert: 

  • Event Id: EVT-STORAGE-00017
Event Message: Read errors have been detected on multiple disks in the same disk group.

Event Description:
There are too many disks reporting read errors in the same RAID group.
As each of these disks completes reconstruction it will be failed.
If the ongoing RAID reconstruction fails, there might be permanent loss of data.

System Behavior:

  • DDOS initiates copy reconstructions for affected disks.
  • Affected disks appear as (E) Error disks in the disk show state output.
  • Other related disk states:
    • (C) = Copy Rebuild Disk (source disk with errors)
    • (R) = Reconstructing SPARE disk
    • (F) = Failed Disk (copy rebuild completed or pending)

  • In this example, we had 4x error disks (E) - 2.53 | 2.41 | 2.30 | 2.4 --> All within the same disk group (Pack 2)
  • 2x rebuilds have completed to available SPAREs leaving the faulty disks as 'F' (Failed)
  • 1x (C) Copy reconstruction is underway to SPARE (2.10)
  • 1x Error Disk (E) will have rebuild 'Pending' until a SPARE is made available. 

Cause

DDOS monitors disk SMART and reliability metrics. When more than one disk in the same disk group reports over 20 read errors per hour, DDOS flags STORAGE-00017 and begins copy reconstruction to prevent data loss. 
 

Resolution

Because this alert involves multiple disks in the same disk group, and may impact data integrity, contact Dell Technical Support, or your contracted support provider immediately.

Support will:

  • Analyze the event logs.
  • Verify the cause of the read errors.
  • Confirm that all reconstructions were completed successfully.
  • Ensure that data integrity has not been compromised.
