Dell Automation Platform: Redfish API returns invalid URI for NIC on PowerEdge

Summary: When querying network adapters using Redfish API on Dell PowerEdge servers, the API may return an invalid URI for certain network adapter resources. This issue is linked to incorrect Vital Product Data (VPD) and firmware changes in the network interface card (NIC) and is resolved by applying the correct firmware updates. ...

Symptoms

  • Redfish API call to:
    /redfish/v1/Chassis/System.Embedded.1/NetworkAdapters

Returns an additional invalid member such as:
    NIC.Embedde2

  • When queried individually, the invalid URI results in an error.
  • PowerEdge iDRAC UI filters out the invalid entry, but API consumers see the incorrect resource.
  • BIOS and iDRAC versions observed during issue:
    • BIOS: 1.0.1
    • iDRAC Firmware: 7.20.70.50

Cause

  • Incorrect Vital Product Data (VPD) in the initial build of the optional LOM card caused improper device capability mapping.
  • The mapping described only a single port while the card has two ports, leading to cosmetic and API-level inconsistencies.
  • Also, a design change increased the LOM firmware Root of Trust signing key size to 4K bytes, requiring updated firmware for proper signature validation.

Resolution

  • Workaround:

    • Apply the latest Broadcom LOM firmware update (version 22.xx.x.x or later).
    • Perform the Dell Update Package (DUP) from within a supported operating system and reboot the server.
    • Do not apply the update by iDRAC or Lifecycle Controller; it must be done from the operating system.
  • Permanent Fix:

    • Use iDRAC firmware version 5.10.25.00 (T6RVR X45) or later with:
      • LOM firmware DFF48 X05 or later, or
      • LOM firmware JFF2M X02 or later
    • These versions include corrected VPD and updated signing key logic.

Additional Information

  • Affected Platforms: Dell PowerEdge servers with Broadcom NetXtreme Gb LOMs
  • Affected Components: Optional LOM cards and embedded NICs.
  • Severity: Standard
  • Fixed Firmware Builds:
    • LOM firmware: DFF48 X05 or later
    • iDRAC firmware: T6RVR X45 or later
