Spare Disks
PURPOSE
This article provides information about Spare disks used in Data Domain systems.

APPLIES TO
All Data Domain (DD) systems
All Data Domain Operating Systems (DDOS) releases

Spare disks are 'Hot' - that is, automatically used as targets for rebuild operations if a disk within the array fails.
Spare Priority: If a disk drive fails, RAID automatically assigns a spare disk within the same enclosure to reconstruct the affected RAID array (disk group).
Note: All Spare disks, excluding Head unit disks, are GLOBAL SPARES. This means that a Spare disk can be used outside of its assigned enclosure or disk pack without impacting performance or system behavior.
If all spares are consumed within a shelf or disk pack, then the Global Sparing feature looks for a spare drive with the same capacity in another shelf/pack.
Spare disks cannot be assigned as usable storage with the aim of expanding capacity.

Spare disks can be identified within the system by issuing the DD-CLI command: # disk show state

Example:
- Below, we see the Failure of 2x disks - 2.2 and 4.26
- Rebuilds have been initiated to Spares in slots, 2.15 & 4.51
sysadmin@hostname# disk show state
